My Priorities

When I walk around Columbia Heights, I feel proud of the diversity and culture that is uniquely ours. From the incredible selection of restaurants and cuisines, to the various languages that are spoken all around, to the charm of historic and colorful row houses, this neighborhood is unlike any other. But I also know that there are many ways we can improve the neighborhood we love and call home. I am running for ANC because I want to work hard to improve our neighborhood, serve as a connector to city resources, and be a representative for diverse points of view. Based on my conversations with residents and business owners, these are my top priorities for Columbia Heights and SMD4:

Support small businesses

Small businesses -- including restaurants, bars, markets, liquor stores, and other storefronts -- are an integral part of the vibrance of Columbia Heights. Unfortunately, there are dozens of empty storefronts across our neighborhood. I have heard from existing businesses in the area about the challenges they face staying afloat. I have also heard from businesses trying to open in Columbia Heights about roadblocks they have hit finding real estate, ultimately choosing to plant their business elsewhere. I will work to support existing businesses and bring more business to our neighborhood by:

  • Making Columbia Heights more attractive to small businesses
  • Working with real estate agents and landowners to fill empty storefronts
  • Collaborating with existing programs (e.g. through District Bridges) to enhance small businesses support

Clean and beautify our neighborhood

While Columbia Heights is already a beautiful neighborhood, trash continues to be a big issue. Let's work together to take care of our neighborhood so that it remains a place that we feel proud to live in. I will do this by:

  • Organizing single-member district clean up events with residents and local businesses
  • Organizing regular neighborhood walks to identify issues and submit 311 requests for trash pick up, rodent issues, overgrown weeds, vacant properties, and more

Create community &  connect neighbors

Columbia Heights is unique because of its history, charm, and diversity. I hope to meet as many neighbors as possible and build a stronger connection between all of us. I will do this by:

  • Creating a dedicated email list for our single-member district
  • Building relationships with neighbors to support a close-knit, supportive community
  • Connecting with other Commissioners to advocate on common issues
